Aluminium vs Plastic Asset Tags: Which Is Better?

Short answer

Neither is universally better. Aluminium suits assets that stay in service for years, are handled often or sit in harsh areas. Plastic and polyester labels suit lighter, shorter-life or high-volume applications where cost per unit matters most.

The choice between metal and plastic is usually framed as a cost question. It is more useful to frame it as a service-life question: how long must this number stay readable, and what will happen to the surface it sits on?

The cost calculation people miss

The real cost of a tag is not its unit price — it is the labour of applying it, plus the labour of doing it again when it fails. Re-tagging a few thousand assets costs far more in staff time than the difference in tag price, which is why long-service assets usually justify metal.
